5 Reasons to Book a Children's Book Author for Your School Visit

There’s something truly magical about watching young readers connect with the power of stories — and even more magical when they meet the people behind the books they love!

As a children's book author and former classroom teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how author visits can spark imagination, build confidence, and inspire a lifelong love of reading. If you're wondering whether an author visit is right for your school or library, here are five reasons why the answer is a resounding YES!

1. Inspire a Love of Reading and Writing

When students meet a real author, books come alive in a whole new way. An author visit shows children that writing isn’t just something they have to do in school — it’s a powerful way to share their voices, dreams, and stories with the world. My visits motivate students to read more independently and engage more deeply with their own writing.

2. Help Students See Themselves in Stories

Representation matters. When kids see an author who looks like them, speaks their language, or shares parts of their culture, they realize that their stories matter too. I love reminding students — especially bilingual, multicultural, and historically underrepresented kids — that their voices are powerful and needed.

3. Build Confidence and Creativity

During my visits, I always share my own journey — from struggling with English as a child to becoming a published author. I didn’t learn to read until I was in fourth (4th) grade because my underserved and underresourced school did not have English as a Second Language (ESL) resources. I want every student to know that practice and perseverance are part of the process. If I can do it, they can too! Author visits empower students to dream bigger and believe in themselves.

4. Enrich Your Literacy Curriculum

Author visits aren’t just exciting — they’re educational! My programs are designed to complement classroom lessons about storytelling, character development, world-building, and the writing process. I also encourage students to pursue their passions and expand their skills during my Career Exploration workshop.

5. Create Unforgettable School Memories

Years later, students might forget what they had for lunch — but they’ll remember the day an author came to visit. It's a special experience that leaves a lasting impression, and it often becomes one of the highlights of the school year. Library author events are also a fantastic way to foster community and inspire readers of all ages.
